Assets Under Visibility: Why Advisors Need the Full Picture

When we talk with our advisor partners, one conversation comes up more than any other: a client is about to make a big decision, like buying a property or investing in a new business, and the advisor realizes they're only seeing part of the story.

The investment account they manage looks fine, but the client also has a private equity commitment at another firm, a loan tied to the family business, and real estate held in a trust—elements that need to be considered to make the right decision, yet none of it is visible.

More often than not, wealthy individuals and families spread assets across advisors, institutions, and legal entities for various strategic reasons. But that means the person advising on a major decision often works with incomplete information.

As HNW and UHNW portfolios grow more complex, clients increasingly expect advice that accounts for their whole financial life, not just the slice one advisor manages. That's what we mean by assets under visibility: seeing beyond the assets you manage to the reality of what's at stake.

As Marc Wall, Sofistic's Director of Business Development, highlights —

‍“Whether an advisor manages a slice of a client’s wealth or the entire portfolio, seeing the full picture is what makes better advice possible. As the market grows more competitive, we’re seeing a significant shift in wealth management: the focus is moving beyond AUM alone, and toward AUV—Assets Under Visibility.”

How firms get a complete view of client wealth today—

Advisors and clients both want a complete view, and a few options exist. Multi-family office platforms do much of it, but they're large, expensive systems built for a small number of firms and households. Some banks have built their own, like Scotia Wealth Management's Total Wealth model, designed around the bank's specialists and clients.

Each works best for the organization that built it. Most advisors, whether at a large Canadian bank or an independent RIA in the U.S., need a way to view clients' wealth as it actually exists: bringing outside accounts, insurance, and real estate alongside what's on the books.

This level of visibility does more than improve advice—it builds deep trust. When clients see that an advisor factors in every piece of their financial puzzle, they feel truly understood, which naturally encourages them to consolidate their trust and expand the relationship over time.

What AI can and can't do for wealth advisors

Achieving this 360-degree view used to mean endless hours of manual data entry, but that is changing. AI is making it much faster to gather statements, reconcile held-away accounts, and keep the picture current.

While AI can surface relevant information and provide useful context or visualizations, it isn't the expert guidance advisors offer clients.

Deciding what an HNW individual or family should do still depends on the expert insight, experience, and personal connection with the client — how do they think about risk? What are they really trying to accomplish? That’s the high-touch service people will always need.

Why total visibility changes the conversation

Once the data is in one place, advisor and client can test ideas together: what happens to cash flow if they buy the property, or how selling the business changes the estate plan. And we've observed this in many of our conversations with wealth advisors throughout Canada and the US

"There is a massive need right now for technology that stops just aggregating data and starts driving strategy. That is exactly what we are solving for—equipping advisors to deliver an elevated tier of service without costing them a minute more of their time."

— Marc Wall, Director of Business Development

From assets managed to families understood

Most firms still measure themselves by assets under management, which tells you what sits on the platform. Assets under visibility tells you how well an advisor understands the family. As families expand their investments across different vehicles and borders, that measure will matter more. Ultimately, the advisors who thrive won't just be the ones who manage the most assets—they will be the ones who see the full picture.
